Western Australia’s beloved Spare Parts Puppet Theatre officially debuts its awe-inspiring large-scale puppet installation, The Whale, at Sydney Festival today. Taking place in the iconic Bondi Pavilion Courtyard, this remarkable free outdoor experience invites Sydneysiders and festivalgoers to step into a dreamlike underwater world from now until January 12.
As the sun sets, the Courtyard is transformed into an enchanting light-scape. Visitors are invited to join a deep-sea journey, animating a 10-metre-long whale puppet and an array of fantastical sea creatures. Through imaginative storytelling and a captivating original score, this installation immerses participants in themes of migration, myth, and mystery. With free admission, The Whale offers an engaging and accessible experience for all.
Philip Mitchell, Artistic Director of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre, said the installation captures the essence of the ocean’s largest creatures and invites reflection on their majesty and importance.
“In many cultures, whales are a symbol of mystery and magnificence, stirring a profound connection within us,” Mitchell said. “The Whale allows families to imagine the whale’s world up close, inspiring wonder and respect for the natural world through puppetry and storytelling. It’s a beautiful opportunity to connect, learn, and create shared memories.”
While The Whale enchants audiences on the east coast, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is also premiering its latest puppet musical, Hometown, in Perth at the Ellie Eaton Theatre, Claremont Showground, starting January 6. Inspired by an unpublished story from celebrated author Shaun Tan, Hometown is an unforgettable exploration of family, identity, and belonging, all set within Tan’s signature dreamlike worlds.
The Whale was co-commissioned by Waverley Council – Bondi Pavilion, City of Busselton, and Curtin University.
