Artistic Director of Spare Parts Puppet Theatre Recognised for Over Two Decades of Exceptional Leadership

Spare Parts Puppet Theatre is proud to announce that Philip Mitchell, Artistic Director of the puppet powerhouse since 2001, has been recognised with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award by the Performing Arts WA Awards (PAWA Awards). The award recognises his outstanding contributions to the arts, particularly in the art of puppetry, and his profound influence on Western Australia’s cultural landscape.

Since assuming the role of Artistic Director at Spare Parts Puppet Theatre more than two decades ago, Mitchell has demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to nurturing the craft of puppetry, creating inspiring and innovative works, employment for Western Australian artists, created training partnerships with the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), and engaged audiences across generations.

Under his leadership, Spare Parts has earned a reputation as a world-class institution, and national leader in the art of puppetry, and is now one of the leading employers of artists and arts workers in the state. Mitchell’s artistic ethos celebrates the art of puppetry with a modern sensibility and deep commitment to storytelling for all ages.

“Philip Mitchell’s dedication to puppetry as both an art form and a means of provocative storytelling has transformed Spare Parts Puppet Theatre into a vibrant centre of creativity and learning,” said David Mofflin, Chair of Spare parts Puppet Theatre. “His vision, leadership, and passion for making the art of puppetry accessible to all, along with his commitment to fostering new talent, are truly worthy of this distinguished recognition.”

Mitchell’s tenure at Spare Parts has seen the creation of numerous critically acclaimed productions, national and international tours, and a relentless dedication to community engagement. His work has consistently pushed the boundaries of traditional puppetry, blending contemporary themes with age-old techniques to produce evocative, thought-provoking performances that resonate with audiences of all ages. Spare Parts’ audience has grown over his time with the company, and under his leadership has delivered the joy of puppetry to millions of Western Australian families.

“It has been an immense privilege to lead Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and to foster a space where talented artists could come together to collaborate, explore, and create work,” said Philip Mitchell. “This award is not only a personal honour, but a testament to the artists and arts workers I have had the privilege of working with over the years. Every production, every performance, and every project we’ve brought to life has been a testament to their talent, dedication, creativity, and unwavering commitment.”

The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Mitchell at the Performing Arts WA Awards ceremony at the Heath Ledger Theatre in Perth April 7, where his exceptional legacy was celebrated by peers, colleagues, and the Western Australian arts community.
